Why Are My Phone Photos So Big?
You take a quick photo and it's 8 MB. A screenshot of the same scene is a fraction of that. Why are phone photos so large? A few things stack up — and once you know them, keeping files small is easy.
1. Megapixels keep climbing
Modern phone cameras capture 12, 48, even 200 megapixels. More pixels means more detail — and more data to store. Most of those pixels are wasted when the photo is only ever viewed on a screen, which needs far fewer.
2. Photos are hard to compress
A real-world photo is full of texture: leaves, skin, fabric, noise from the sensor. Compression works by finding repetition, and photos have less of it than a flat graphic or a screenshot. So the same format produces a much bigger file for a photo than for a simple image.
3. Extra data rides along
Every photo carries hidden metadata — location, timestamp, camera model, exposure settings. Some phones also save a second "computational" copy or shoot in high-bit-depth modes that balloon the size further.
What to do about it
- Resize for the destination. A photo for the web or a form doesn't need to be 6000px wide. Dropping to 1600px cuts size dramatically with no visible loss on screen.
- Compress with a sensible quality. Around 80 is invisible to the eye but far smaller on disk.
- Convert to WebP. It's 25–35% smaller than JPG for the same look.
- Strip metadata. Compressing also removes location and camera info — a nice privacy bonus.
